I am very, very proud to announce that FLOTSAM is ready! It's a book I've made of sketchbook drawings from over the past year.
It's hardbound with dust jacket, 40 pages full color, and crammed with sketches, doodles, and brain-wispies that no one has ever seen. I culled from my Moleskine sketchbooks of 2010 and 2011, and if you look hard, you can see the original idea-buds of paintings that I've made in the past year.
Keeping a sketchbook is so vital to me as an artist and human being-- it's a dumping ground for ideas, a place to work out kinks and explore brain-jungles, and one hell of a way to pass train rides. I have had to say goodbye to so many paintings over the years as they've gone to good homes, so my volumes of sketchbooks are really, really special to me, collections of my raw ideas and artifacts of the art I've made. All my friends hang out in there. I want to share, and that's why I made this book.
Some of the sketchbook pages featured therein follow; you can preview more of the book right here.
PLUS PRINT GIVEAWAY!
To celebrate the birth of Flotsam, I'm going to give away one of my Society6 prints! All you have to do is RT or mention #flotsambook on twitter to win! I'll pick a winner at random on Saturday morning, 2pm EST.
While I'm working on my massive (for me, anyway-- 16" x 18"!) piece for Thinkspace's 5th Anniversary Show (hooray, guys!), I figured I would share a few recent pages from my sketchbook... I've been working in a Moleskine watercolor book in the past few months, which has let me bring some gouache into sketch-mode... it's nice to work with it in a less structured, messy, low-pressure way. It's just such a fun, pretty paint.

The fellow at the top ended up evolving into the main character of the current piece. Or rather, perhaps, the first of many of his kind. Eh, well, you'll see soon enough. ;)
